Thousands of protestors gathered in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside on February 14, 2022 to honour missing and murdered Indigenous and women and girls and demand decolonization and institutional accountability. Toward the end of the march, protestors toppled and defaced Gastown’s statue of John “Gassy Jack” Deighton, a British colonist who married and impregnated a 12-year-old Squamish girl named Quahailya.
